I need help with a movie title! It's a movie about a man who goes to Ireland on business (a land deal?) and falls in love with the town and a woman and the people. And there's something with the Northern Lights.

??? WHAT IS THAT?

Fanfic Trope Meme

I'm taking this mostly as whether I've written these things, though I've also talked about a little whether I enjoy them or not.

Genderswap: Okay, are we defining it as "wakes up a girl" or "always a girl"? I've written both, but I am much more interested *cough* in "always a girl" and mostly only in SPN. My id, let me show you it, apparently. (I am not interested at all in turning the women into men, unless the story is about a FTM transperson.)

Bodyswap: I've never written it, but I enjoy reading it on occasion.

Drunk!fic: Heh. Yes. Many, many times. Drunk boys! Fumbly kisses!

Huddling together for warmth: I've written "we have to get out of these wet clothes" but I don't think I've ever written "huddling together for warmth."

Undercover in a gay bar: I haven't written it, though I've enjoyed reading it on occasion.

Pretending to be married: I'm pretty sure I've written pretending to be dating. I still want to write the Mal/Kaylee pretending to be married story. It's for a job! Which doesn't go smooth! And possibly some girl!Sam/Dean pretending to be married fic. We'll see.

Secretly a virgin: Secretly? I don't think so. Wait, I did write one where Lily is surprised James is a virgin.

Amnesia: Only the sadly unfinished amnesia!Sirius story. Sigh.

Crossdressing: Not as a kink, since it's really not my kink. I did make Jayne willingly put on a nun's habit once, though.

Forced to share a bed: I'm going to say yes on this, though details are hazy. I do love this trope.

Aliens made them do it: Huh. I have written "an incubus/succubus made them do it" – does that go here or under "aphrodisiacs"? I would like to write a "MM/WW: aliens make them do it" story, so possibly in the future?

Wingfic: Not in the generally accepted sense, i.e., giving wings to characters who don't have them in canon. I can't remember if there is any stuff about wings in the Lucifer/Michael story. Before SPN, I only ever liked it in terms of characters who already have wings (see Aziraphale and Crowley or Michael and Lucifer), but I have enjoyed some Winchesters-sprout-wings fic in SPN.

Mpreg: No. No. No. A million times no.

Mistakenly assumed to be gay: I've had people mistakenly (OR ARE THEY?) assume characters are a couple, though I don't think it's ever been the whole point of a story.

Let's play truth or dare: yeah, I think back in the XMM days I might have. I know I've written Never Have I Ever fic.

Mary Sue fic: Yes, though only in my own head these days.

Aphrodisiacs: Not unless the incubus thing goes here.

Curtain fic: Yes, though with Sam and Dean, they never stay retired. Sirius and Remus, otoh, yes.

Hurt/Comfort: Mildly? I mean, given Remus's post-full-moon state, it is kind of always there in Sirius/Remus fic? But explicitly, with the kind of lingering, loving detailing of the injuries and whatever? No. Generally, I let canon do the hurting, and I write the comforting. I don't much care for whump fic, though I read it sometimes when pickings are otherwise slim. (of course, what do I know? I wrote a story that is 11K words of schmoopy comfort and I've seen it tagged as h/c, so other people's mileage may vary.)

Apocalypse fic: Shockingly, yes. A couple of times, even. Though with the BSG/SPN crossover, it was because the apocalypse actually happening was BSG canon.

Someone has a baby: Yup. A sekrit incest baby, in one case.

Telepathic soulbonding: Um. I've written Scott/Jean, and there's definitely telepathy involved. I haven't gone in for any kind of soulbonding since I was about 13, though. I find the whole concept creepy and invasive even without involving telepathy, which is creepy and invasive almost by definition. *shudders*

Werewolves mate for life: Only if you count having the werewolf mock the idea. I do remember reading a good story where Sirius and Remus ended up bonded and were really unhappy about it. that was an interesting take on the trope, but mostly, no. Not for me.

I'm surprised hooker fic isn't on this list. Which, I wrote a whole freaking series of hooker fic back in XMM. That's where I got my melodrama on - hookerfic, addiction fic, rape recovery, miscarriage, alcoholism, adultery, death. Now I write stories where the big emotional climax focuses on two people sharing a cup of coffee or a piece of pie. Heh.

So the whiff of Big Bang is in the air – with this wonderful promo trailer by Loki to get everyone fired up. It’sa great example of what a wonderful collaboration this challenge is - not only between writers and artists, but everyone who betas, adn cheers on their friends and of course read the fics.

I still don’t think I have the writing chops to do it, but we’lll see. In the meantime, I can DO GRAPHS!
Loki’s vid should some of the amazing stats of the challenge – over 13 million words written over the 3 years and the average story length has gone from 28,000 to 37,000.

And now for some graphs.

Figure One shows the number of stories in each category. The totals for each year are: 28 (2007), 108 (2008), 225 (2009). I included the two femmeslash stories in 2007 in the slash category – there weren’t any in subsequent years – the remainder of the stories were all Wincest. In 2009, the slash category contains 5 Dean/Castiel stories, and one Dean/OMC.

Figure Two shows the percentage of stories in the Wincest, Gen and RPF categories.

Notably, % of Gen stories has stayed pretty stable, with the big increase being in RPF fic which has gone from 42% of all fic in 2007, to 61% in 2009. In 2010, I’d expect to see a huge increase in Dean/Castiel fics, and it will be interesting to see how this alters the distribution across the categories.

The amount of creative energy involved here is incredible, and I love fandom for that. Ironically, a huge numbers of these fics, most of the RPS AU, are basically original stories, which without fandom may not get written either.

Seriously, if we ever wanted to take over the world...

Why I love Joe and Nick:

ETA: Apparently my bandwidth exceeded. SIGH. Or, that girl's bandwidth from whence came this hotlink. OH WELL.

This hug happened during the chat where Joe said that what he likes about Nick is he's so soft. Soft heart. Soft skin while everyone else chuckled awkwardly.

So yay its January and soon some of my fav shows will be BACK. Of course I can’t wait til Superantural returns on 21 January – but there are also other shows I am all bouncy about.

LOST. OMG. Last season. EVER. A show that is utter utter crack – the Twin Peaks of this decade. So glad I hung around to be part of this experience. Can’t wait to squee with my fellow Losties! WTFBBQPOLARBEARS??!

Chuck. A happy shiny show that is only back due to the actors and fans joining forces and eating Subway. Tru Fax. There is just so much joy in this one. And Jeffster. And now Chuck knows kung fu ;D

24. This was innovative TV when it started – stories told in realtime, using split screens to track different story lines. Now - not so much. Look, I know what will happen – Jack will threaten to torture someone with office equipment unless they tell him where the {insert weapon of mass destruction} is. There will be a traitor in the White House, a mole in CTU and Kim Bauer will get kidnapped. But it’s one helluva ride

Burn Notice Before Leverage and White Collar, there was BN and its still my fav. Great characters, pretty cinematography and tightly written snappy stories.

Friday Night Lights While it continues to have great performances and moments, I do feel this season has lost a bit of momentum. Still one of the best shows on TV though and worth watching for Connie Briton and Taylor Kitsch.

Leverage. If I could just watch the bits with the great team banter I’d be happy. The case of the week plots are very clumsily told and tend to bore me. Still, will download if I have the bandwidth.

Southland. Saved from the axe by TNT, I’ll be interested to see how it goes. Well written character-based cop show, not quite as edgy as it would like you to believe but miles better than those crime procedurals. Features major gay character. Lets see how gay he’s allowed to be.

New shows I’m keen to see: Caprica (BSG prequel) – really liked the pilot

Shows that aren’t back for AGES: Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Glee.

What are you keen to come back? What new shows have you heard about?

What a Swell Party This Is
The Thin Man; Nora Charles (Nick/Nora); pg; 2,245 words
Nora's going to need another drink for this.

Written for [info]great_whatsit for [info]yuletide 2009. Originally posted here. Thanks so much to [info]fleurdeleo for brainstorming, and to [info]luzdeestrellas and [personal profile] gloss for betaing and making this a much better story than it was originally.

brief commentary )

Anyway. I really like how it turned out. The Nick/Nora banter at the end was the easiest part to write, and I kind of wish I'd had more of it, but it didn't seem necessary to the story at that point. They are an awesome couple, though. I also like the title, which comes from "Well Did You Evah?" by Cole Porter, and seemed to fit perfectly (better than "the Surprise Party" or "The Unexpected Guest", which were my original, oh so boring, ideas)), and my recipient liked it, so I am pleased.

Thanks to everyone who commented over at the AO3 site. I really appreciate it, and hope to answer comments soon.

hi flist -
I am looking to update the Crack fic page of recs on the Super Wiki. When the Wiki started, fic recs were included because fandom was small and there were no rec communities. Of course things changed, and so we stopped listing fics on entires for pairings or genres. However the Crack page has always been very popular, and I think it's important because often the Crack, well, slips between the cracks when it comes to recs.

So i am looking for your help in updating it. I am especially looking for fics in the following categories:
* Body Swap
* Animal Transformation
* Time travel
* De-agification
* Cross dressing
* Amnesia
* Wing!fic esp involving Castiel
* Defies description - the whacked out and crazy.

I'm also after any speciality/themed rec lists to add here

I feel like I spent this holiday with family, and with Sam and Dean. Spent a lot of time with visitors in the house, which is sometimes claustrophobic and fake and draining, but not this year. This year every visit was better than the next, culminating in what was basically a seven hour laugh fest. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard for so long. My soul feels invigorated from all the happy socializing, I tell ya'. And I've buried myself inside a ridiculously life-consuming SPN picspam that has me alternating between utter glee and shame for starting it when I know better.

My family and my family. Also laughed a lot (SO MUCH!) with Community and cried a little with Ten.

This was a good one.

BELATED CHEERS, YA'LL.

ahaha, NICK JONAS. You guys, he's totally charming. OK?

SEE, you have to watch this. IGNORE the fact that 10001 girls are screaming in the background (you get used to it), and that he's using some kind of SCHMOOZY, Elvis voice (HAHA, NICK. ELVIS and ELVIS COSTELLO and THE BOSS?).

From 0:47 on (when he's talking all DRYLY about being THE FUNNY ONE) he is completely charming. I was just telling Nova today that he's NOT THAT FUNNY (he's kind of TOO SERIOUS) and she was all "NO, HE IS FUNNY," and I was like "Yeah, ohhhhhkaaaay."

WELL. I WAS WRONG. HE IS PRETTY FUNNY. AND IT'S CHARMING. THE END.

ETA: his bandmate tells a LAME, WHOLESOME JOKE and he's like "WOW. THAT WAS A CRAZY ONE!"

ahaha. STUPID.

I'm going to consider Broken Toys a success. Twelve people (including me) signed up. One dropped out a couple weeks ago, so a pinch hitter covered. Ten stories have been posted, and everyone who posted a story has a story, so I'm considering it a win.

I think the best part, aside from some awesome new Max/Alec stories being written, is that Original Cindy gets some love. OC is an amazing character who totally gets short-shrift in fic. I don't have any real resolutions for this year, but I think I need to write some OC-centric fic. I think that needs to go on my list. There are also two cool crossovers, if you like that sort of thing.

Read, love, comment.

Given all the wank swirling right now about the Yuletide move to AO3 (which I just lost an hour of my life reading about), I suppose I should announce right now that when the functionality of the collections portion of AO3 is sorted more thoroughly, I plan to not only run Remix on AO3, but also to move the old archives over there.

(Note: It may not happen this year. It may not even be me running it at that point, but I'm pretty sure it will happen.)

The old database is old and as some of you know, because you've emailed me when it happens, it sometimes breaks and I don't know how to fix it. I don't even have the admin password for it. Instead of having to frantically email poor [info]moirarogers when that happens, I would like to be able to let the AO3 coders handle any problems that crop up. (This will also include moving the archive from the very first Remix/Redux, and backing up the ones which have been hosted on LJ.)

Why am I planning on doing this? Because while Remix isn't the size of Yuletide, it is probably the second-largest (after Yuletide) multifandom anonyfest for LJ-based fandom. There are regularly between 250 and 300 people involved (factoring in pinch hitters who don't officially sign up), and at least 50 fandoms each year. So it's big, and the old database is creaky, and while the LJ setup has worked pretty well, considering, it also requires unlocking by hand every story when the archive goes live, moderator involvement in making sure tags are uniform, people who neglect to put their names on when the author reveals happen, and various other things that cause a lot of work for me and the folks who help me. I am fundamentally lazy, and I have less time these days for fannish stuff, so making the minutiae of administration easier gets two big thumbs up from me.

What does this mean for your old remixes? As with yuletide, I prefer that people orphan their stories rather than delete them - and just fyi, 'orphaning' means only removing your name at AO3. You can still claim your stories anywhere else you've archived them, since they are in fact, your stories - but I don't feel the need to necessarily ban folks who delete their stories from AO3 from participating, mostly because if the ficathon is being hosted there, it seems unlikely those people will want to participate anyway.

Since I'm not actually going to delete any of the old locations, your stories will still live there, at least until such time as either the database breaks irrevocably or [info]hwmitzy gives up the illuminatedtext.com domain or I let unfitorsociety.net lapse.

I do not want to discuss anyone's issues with OTW or AO3 in this post. I will freeze or screen or delete or ban as I see fit if people try to bring their grudgewank to my LJ.

While I am friends with any number of OTW board members and AO3 coders/tag wranglers/etc., I am not personally involved with the organization or the running of the archive, and I really don't care what your feelings are about either of them. I understand that people have fundamental philosophical differences with OTW, and while I respect the sane fans who do, this is not about that.

This is about the possibility that AO3 will make running Remix exponentially easier for me, and that is what I care about, because I have been thisclose to giving it up for the past two years, and was considering not running it at all this year (2010), but I love Remix and I know there are other people who want its existence to continue (with the possible inclusion of the original popslash remix, since I think last year was the last year it was being run), and the possible functionality of AO3 for anonymous challenges gives me hope that at some point, the workload can be eased.

I'm sure there are issues I've not yet considered, and we'll address those when they come up, but for now, this is my plan for Remix.

--
*And just FYI - if you google Remix/Redux (or Remix Redux), the first five links are to LJ journals or communities associated with the ficathon, so I'm not sure how there could be more visibility with a move to AO3.
